Frosthaven scenario level calculator

Enter the level of everyone at the table. You get the recommended scenario level, and the numbers that scale with it.

You can still set the level anywhere from 0 to 7 at the start of the scenario.

4 characters counted.

How to use it

  1. Type each character's level. Leave a box empty if fewer than four are playing.
  2. Tick solo mode if one player is running two or more characters.
  3. Read the scenario level, then the monster and reward numbers underneath.

The formula

Recommended scenario level = the average level of the characters, divided by 2, rounded up.

Three level 4 characters average 4, so the scenario level is 2. Everyone at level 2 averages 2, so the scenario level is 1 — the table only moves up when a character reaches level 3.

At the start of any scenario the level can be set to anything from 0 to 7. Lower it if the party is struggling, raise it if you want the fights harder.

Group of four level 3 characters: 2, not 1.5

Rounding up is what people get wrong. (3 + 3 + 3 + 3) ÷ 4 = 3, and 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5, which rounds up to 2.

Mixed parties work the same way. Levels 1, 2, 5 and 6 average 3.5, half of that is 1.75, so the level is 2.

Solo mode

A single player running two or more characters plays at a higher difficulty: add 1 to the average level before dividing by 2, then round up.

Three level 4 characters are level 2 normally and level 3 in solo mode.

What scales with it

Monster level equals the scenario level, so monster hit points, attack values and the rest come straight off that row of the stat cards.

Gold conversion turns each coin token into more gold at higher levels. Trap and hazardous terrain damage go up too — the two are not the same number, and both are on the row below.

Bonus experience is the XP every character gets for finishing the scenario, before any XP printed on ability cards.

Questions

Can I play a scenario above or below the recommended level?
Yes. The rulebook lets the party set the scenario level anywhere from 0 to 7 at the start of a scenario. The recommendation is only a starting point.
Does the digital version use the same formula?
The digital campaign picks a scenario level for you when you start a scenario, so use this page to see the maths behind that pick and what the level does to gold, traps and bonus XP.
Why is monster level the same as scenario level?
In Frosthaven they are the same number, unlike some other games that offset them. Scenario level 3 means monster level 3.
