Frosthaven enhancement cost calculator
Pick what you are adding to the card. The five cost modifiers are applied in the order the rulebook lists them, so you can see where the gold goes.
How to use it
- Pick the enhancement you want from the list.
- Set the level of the ability card it goes on.
- Tick multi-target only if the ability can hit more than one figure or tile.
- Add how many enhancements that action already has, then read the total.
How Frosthaven prices an enhancement
Start with the base cost for the type of enhancement (Appendix D of the Frosthaven rulebook, page 77). Then apply these modifiers one at a time, in this order:
1. Double it if the ability targets more than one figure or tile. Target +1, area-of-effect hex and element enhancements are exempt from this doubling.
2. Halve it if the action has a lost icon but no persistent icon.
3. Triple it if the ability gives a persistent bonus. Summon stat enhancements are exempt.
4. Add 25 gold for each level of the ability card above level 1.
5. Add 75 gold for each enhancement already on that action.
Base costs
Move +1, Range +1, Pierce +1, Heal +1, Push +1 — 30 gold. Pull +1 — 20. Attack +1 and Teleport +1 — 50. Jump and Summon Move +1 — 60. Target +1, Ward and Bless and Wound — 75. Shield +1 — 80. Summon HP +1 and Regenerate and Muddle — 40. Summon Range +1 and Poison — 50. Retaliate +1 — 60. Strengthen and Element — 100. Summon Attack +1 — 100. Immobilize and Curse and Wild Element — 150.
Area-of-effect hex enhancements are 200 gold divided by the number of existing hexes, rounded up.
Temporary Enhancements variant
If your group plays the Temporary Enhancements variant, the sticker comes off when the character retires. The price changes: work out the normal cost first, then take off 20 gold if the action already has an enhancement, then reduce what is left by 20 percent, rounding up.
The calculator applies that variant when you tick the box, so you can compare it with the standard price.
Board game or digital
These are the board game prices from Appendix D. Frosthaven Digital uses the same enhancement idea, but its campaign is a different build of the game and Snapshot Games can tune numbers between patches, so treat the digital price as close rather than guaranteed.
If your digital game shows a different number, the game is right and this page is stale. The rulebook numbers above are what the board game charges.
Questions
- Why is the same enhancement more expensive on a level 5 card?
- Every level above 1 adds 25 gold. A level 5 card pays 100 more than a level 1 card for the same sticker.
- Does multi-target doubling apply to Target +1?
- No. Target +1, area-of-effect hex and element enhancements are exempt from the doubling, even on an ability that hits several figures.
- Do enhancements survive retirement?
- In the standard campaign yes, the sticker stays on the card and the class keeps the upgrade forever. With the Temporary Enhancements variant they come off when the character retires, which is why that variant is cheaper.
- Can I take an enhancement back off a card?
- Not in the board game campaign: stickers are permanent for that class. The Temporary Enhancements variant exists for groups that want to undo them, and it is cheaper for exactly that reason.
